Peer-reviewed specialized studies have shown that the advantages of therapeutic massage include pain elimination, diminished trait anxiety and despression symptoms, and temporarily reduced blood pressure level, heart rate, and state anxiety. Theories driving what massage might do incorporate blocking nociception (gate control theory), activating the parasympathetic nervous system, that might stimulate the release of endorphins and serotonin, preventing fibrosis or scar tissue formation, boosting the flow of lymph, and improving sleep, but these results are yet to become supported by well-designed medical studies.
